Windsor Chair Making:  Build a Continuous Arm Chair with Peter Galbert

continous Arm GalbertBuilding a Windsor chair is not about a style, but a way of working with wood that is a wide departure from the usual flat and square.

The project chair for this class, the Continuous Arm Chair, was an innovation in the development of the Windsor style and technology, and has become an icon of American furniture.

This class covers all the action from tree to chair. Students will split parts from a log, shave them, bend them and join them into their hand carved seat. We will cover basic topics like sharpening, wood technology, green wood and dried wood shaping and tools needed which will enhance your ability to go forth and make chairs at home. The turned legs will be provided for you, though spindle turning will be covered in demonstration.

Be ready to work hard and learn a whole new way of woodworking.

We’ll demystify the angles and curves that go into making a successful chair while demonstrating how hand tools are the most effective way to build an heirloom chair.  The unique format of this class: two 3 day weekends, one month apart, allows participants to work on any parts during the break, brush up and practice skills learned in the first weekend and rest up in between sessions! Don’t miss this unique opportunity to learn with one of America’s leading Windsor chair makers. Tuition: $825.00 plus materials
