Make an Arts & Crafts Inspired Dining Chair with Bob Van Dyke & Tim Spratlin

Van Dyke Arts Crafts chair 640A chair is one of the more challenging woodworking projects you can take on. The balance between making the chair as strong as possible while maintaining a lightweight and attractive design, the angles involved to make the back comfortable, creating the curved parts along with the sheer number of mortise and tenons will exercise all the woodworking skills you have learned up till now. The chair features tapered legs and and tapered back posts. Following the typical Arts & Crafts Aesthetic, the back "splat" is made up of a series of square spindles. The clean & simple design assures that it will complement the furnishings in most rooms. A number of you will ask to make more than one chair during the class but this always creates a series of logistical problems. Rather than agreeing to this I will recommend that you purchase a second set of materials (in advance please!) and plan on duplicating the chair in your own shop. This will allow you to make as many chairs as you want and has the added advantage of making you really learn the intricacies and challenges of setting up the machines and the joinery by your self. This is not a beginner class and if you do not have some basic machine and hand-tool experience the class will suffer. As an added bonus, noted upholsterer Mike Mascelli will be offering his excellent weekend upholstery class immediately following this class. Mike will guide you through the making of a slip seat to fit your chair. Please make sure you have the appropriate "show cover" material for the class. This will be a fast paced but very valuable class. sign up soon- Class size is limited.  Tuition: $795.00 (plus materials).
