Make an Arts & Crafts Style Glass Front Bookcase with Bob Van Dyke
This advanced workshop features a handsome frame and panel bookcase in your choice of cherry or mahogany. The design is loosely based on those made famous by Gustav Stickley and Harvey Ellis in the early twentieth century. Making glass paneled doors, wedged through mortise and tenon joints and precisely morticing door hinges are only a few of the distinctive features of this great learning experience. The haunched mortice and tenons and the half lap joints used in the construction of the door frame are an interesting variation on the “usual” joinery and offer some very neat answers to some fairly difficult joinery problems. Because of the magnitude of this project we have broken the class into two parts. The first week we will complete as much of the carcase and the door parts as possible. Surfacing and “dry-fitting” will be done outside of the allotted class time. We will then return for a three day weekend to finish up assembly and hanging the door. Participants should be prepared to do this “homework” either in their own shops or, by arrangement, in the school shop. Woodworking II, Fundamentals of Furniture Making or the equivalent is required. Tuition: $625.00 (plus materials)
