Wood Selection & Technology with Lowrie Sargent Print

Wood Selection & Technology with Lowrie Sargent

A successful woodworking project starts with the selection and purchase of the best wood for your project, yet rarely do we really think about what makes a species or a board "best". During these two days we will develop a chart of the common domestic hardwoods showing many of their characteristics, such as grain, color, strength and workability. We will learn how lumber is harvested, dried and milled, what defects can occur and learn how to calculate seasonal wood movement and design your project accordingly. In addition, we will examine the lumber purchasing process- Starting with a plan or cut list, calculating the inherent waste percentages and what factors contribute to that and then how to select boards that best yield the characteristics you desire. If you have had any questions or uncertainties about what lumber to use, how to buy it or how to get from the "idea stage" to actually cutting wood then this is a class you should take. Lowrie Sargent, an accomplished furniture maker from Camden, Maine will share his years of expertise in this unique weekend class. Lowrie's work can be seen on his website at www.rockycoastjoinery.com (opens a new window). Tuition $195.00 (materials included)
