Traditional Furniture Inlay Techniques with Phil Lowe

bellflower_inlay.jpg Federal furniture was customarily embellished with stringing, bandings, bellflowers and fans. In this course with Phil Lowe , one of this country’s leading experts on 18th & 19th century furniture styles and techniques, students will make his or her own tool especially designed to inlay stringing into a sample table leg. Simple bandings will also be glued up and sawn. Bellflowers and fans will be cut from veneers and appropriately inlayed into solid stock. The age old technique of sand shading will also be explored, leaving the student with an increased awareness in the evolution of furniture ornamentation.
