Build a 1765 New York Corner Chair-with W. Mickey Callahan

Chippendale_corner_chairAlthough corner or “roundabout” chairs are not as common for the period, they are never-the-less a fully developed chair that is extremely comfortable and building one provides a unique and challenging experience. In this class, past president of the Society of American Period Furniture Makers, Mickey Callahan will take you from the chair’s historical significance to the nuts and bolts of creating your very own chair. This corner chair was originally featured in a construction article written by Mickey for FWW Issue #215 (Nov./Dec. 2010).

In this class, students will learn efficient approaches to creating curved elements such as cabriole legs that are combined with other elements by means of systematic shaping and joining. In addition, the carving of ball and claw feet and a low relief shell will be covered in a set of simple exercises where students will have a chance to develop their carving skills before executing the final piece. Students will also learn to apply several unique techniques and short cuts that will improve on the accuracy of critical fitting joints common to all period-style chairs. While every endeavor will be made to complete the chair in the class, emphasis will be placed on creating all of the parts necessary to assemble and finish the chair at home without the time constraints of a week long class. If necessary, the school may schedule an additional weekend class to allow students to receive extra help in completing their chair and have an opportunity to upholster the chair’s slip seat. Don’t miss this great chance to make a unique heirloom furniture piece that had its origins before revolutionary times. Sign Up Today. Tuition: $795.00 plus materials

Section 072114A: Monday-Saturday, July 21-26. 9:00am - 5:00pm

Hi Bob,
Just a quick note to thank you and Will for an excellent experience in the Chapin Class.  I had to be home early and was not able to properly thank  you for the additional time on Sunday.  I have learned a lot in this class as I have in all of your programs.  I’ll see you in the fall.

I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed yesterday's class Sharpening Hand Saws, with Matt Cianci.
