Carving for Furniture Makers - Flames and Finials - with Will Neptune
The carved surfaces of turnings and the eye-catching effect of carved patterns are a powerful combination. You see the overall form of the turning and are drawn in by the more complex details of the carving.
This unique class will concentrate on the embellishments and carving that can be done on turned forms. Corkscrew shaped "flames" and pineapples come to mind, but what about reeds, ropes and gadrooning? All of these details rely on the form created by the turning and are easy to adapt to many projects that have parts made on a lathe. Each student will work on practice turnings to learn the strategies and methods used for some of the basic forms. Many of the designs are based on simple layout lines and use similar techniques to give a wide range of effects. Demonstration topics will include fixtures for holding turnings, indexing and layout, tool selection and reading the grain direction along with showing how to relate these ideas to more complex examples. Don't miss this opportunity to learn from one of this country's leading wood carvers. Tuition: $195.00 (plus materials)
